As one of the most remote and challenging places on the planet, Antarctica has long captivated the imagination of travelers and photographers alike. The unspoiled beauty of its icy landscapes, rugged coastlines, and abundant wildlife have drawn adventurers from around the world in search of once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

For photographers, Antarctica presents a unique challenge and opportunity. Capturing the stunning natural beauty and vibrant wildlife of this pristine environment requires a combination of skill, patience, and knowledge of how to capture this unique beauty best.

I am happy to announce that I have teamed up in partnership with Muench Workshops for an amazing Antarctica photo workshop designed to help photographers of all levels capture the stunning beauty of this unique destination. With over 25 trips under my belt, I am well-versed in the challenges and opportunities presented by this otherworldly destination.

The workshop takes place over 11 days and includes a range of activities designed to help photographers maximize their time in Antarctica. Participants will sail aboard the Sea Spirit, a comfortable ice-class expedition ship, taking in the breathtaking scenery of the Antarctic Peninsula and making stops at various points of interest along the way.

The Sea Spirit

The last trip I made to Antarctica ended a week before the pandemic was declared.  It was a great trip.  I can’t tell you how much I have missed Antarctica, and this trip is the perfect opportunity to revisit this Amazing location.

I was married there in 2015 at Neko Harbor, a destination that we will most likely visit during this trip.  My wife has joined me on two Antarctica trips, and she was just blown away by both visits.   This is a great trip to do with your spouse or partner.

I have seen and photographed this continent under every conceivable condition, and each time, I come away with enough images to keep me busy editing for a year.

We will be traveling on the Sea Spirit. The ship is ideally suited for this expedition, which will be for photographers only.  There is plenty of room to stretch out and work on your images in between landings and zodiac excursions.  The days are long this time of year, so plan on full days of photography.

Throughout the journey, The Muench team of instructors and I will provide personalized instruction and guidance, helping photographers to hone their skills and capture truly stunning images. From capturing the awe-inspiring beauty of the towering glaciers and icebergs to getting up close and personal with penguins, seals, whales, and other wildlife, participants will have ample opportunity to practice their craft and learn from some of the best in the business.

But it’s not just about photography. The Antarctica photo workshop is also designed to give participants a deep appreciation for the natural beauty and unique characteristics of this astonishing destination. From learning about the ecology and geology of the region to visiting important historical sites and gaining insight into the challenges of living and working in such an extreme environment, participants will come away with a wealth of knowledge and memories that will last a lifetime.

One of the things that set this Antarctica photo workshop apart from other photography workshops is its focus on sustainability and responsible travel. The expedition ship used for the journey is outfitted with advanced technologies that help minimize its environmental impact, allowing participants to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of Antarctica without harming its delicate ecosystem.

In addition, the Muench Workshop team places a strong emphasis on educating participants about the importance of conservation efforts in Antarctica and encouraging responsible tourism practices. This includes minimizing waste and taking steps to reduce one’s carbon footprint while traveling.

The photography workshop business is a small little industry, and many of us that have been doing photo workshops for decades have gotten to know each other.  I was honored and so excited when Marc Muench called and asked me if I would join this trip with him.  He has an amazing workshop business, and I couldn’t think of anyone else I would want to partner up with for a trip like this.

It’s time to get out and photograph again, and trips like this don’t come around every day.  You can find out all the information you may possibly need on the Muench Antarctica Workshop page.

Fifty-Plus Years of Photographic Adventures

I see the world through the lens and a frame. Photography, for me, is an extension of who I am. I have gone through many stages in my career. At one time, I was a portrait photographer with many prestigious clients. Over time, I grew restless for something else in the field. I truly enjoy my current work as a fine art landscape photographer. There is something special about examining and photographing everything, from grand scenes in nature that are there for a moment and then gone to industrial landscapes and focusing on the incredibly minute details of peeling paint and rust. I have been most fortunate to travel to many wonderful places on this planet.

I have fond memories of nights and weekends spent in the darkroom creating prints. The stereo blasting. It could be fun, and it could be tedious. You didn’t always know what you were going to get, and, at times, it required extensive hands-on darkroom manipulation. I can still smell the chemicals. I was taught by the masters of the darkroom.

Today that has all changed thanks to computers, digital cameras, and Photoshop. The darkroom is the computer. Some things are still unpredictable, but the tools to achieve the final result allow you to see them immediately on the screen in real-time and right in front of you. Digital allows you to capture a range of tonalities and exposures that were impossible with film. Variables such as emulsion, temperature, chemistry, and exposure are taken out of the equation. What you see on your computer monitor is what you will get when printed.  One thing that hasn’t changed is the music. It goes along with creating and working on images. Thank God for iTunes.

I embraced digital early on. It continues to evolve and provide flexibility to all who embrace it. The digital age is still young and has completely transformed our industry. Never has a switch from analog to digital been so prevalent as in photography. I’m looking forward to seeing where the next ten years take us.

My career in photography has evolved since 1972, when I first began making a living with photography. Today I am also CEO and Owner of photopxl.com, one of the most visited and prestigious websites for photographers on the internet.  I lead photography workshops to the edge of the planet locations as well as provide instructional videos to photographers on how to improve their craft.

Presently, in addition to photoPXL and Rockhopper Workshops, I am Artist In Residence at the Indianapolis Art Center.  I offer three dayy courses on Fine Art Printing throughout the year at this marvelous facility.

There doesn’t seem to be anything that can dampen my passion and enthusiasm for photography. It has opened doors to the world for me, and I am most grateful I can share my experiences with others.

I look forward to sharing this adventure with you.
