Kevin Raber

It’s all about the passion . . . the passion of photography and the beauty of the world that I get an opportunity to see and capture with my camera.  I have been doing photography since I was 12 and since that first day and up to today and I am sure tomorrow, I find myself consumed with taking and making great photographs. My history runs deep and I have progressed through many stages of photography in my lifetime.  I had studios in the Philadelphia area, I worked for one of the premier color labs in the country and I was a big part of the digital revolution that has enveloped photography today.  Today I am the publisher of photoPXL.com, a website dedicated to the photo enthusiast. Previously, for 13 years I worked for Phase One a very progressive camera company making the finest cameras in the world.  My job allows me to work with photographers from around the globe and to photograph in some of the most beautiful places there are.  I am blessed with a job I love and many friends I have made along the way.

THE FAROE ISLANDS WORKSHOP 2020

With Steve Gosling and Kevin Raber

SOLD OUT – Waiting List

The Giant and the Witch Tjornuvik

WHERE

The Faroe Islands are situated in the North Atlantic about halfway between Iceland and Norway. The Faroes are comprised of 18 rocky, volcanic islands connected by road tunnels, ferries, causeways, and bridges. It’s a dramatic and windswept landscape with mountains, valleys, grassy heathland and steep coastal cliffs that harbor thousands of seabirds. The coastline stretches for 1289 kms (800 miles) so you’re never more than around 5kms (3 miles) from the coast. The islands isolated position and their location in the North Atlantic means that changeable weather is a constant feature – great for the photographer looking to capture moody and evocative images!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Experience an 8 day/7 night workshop in this wonderful location for landscape photography in the company of two very experienced photographers – Kevin Raber from the US and Steve Gosling, who is based in the UK. We look forward to sharing our knowledge, insights, and passion for photography and the natural world as we travel around these amazing islands. And, as the many participants who have been with us before will testify, time with the two of us will be full of good humor and fun!

We also hope your time with us will be educational, instructive and informative to help you develop and refine your photographic skills. Our aim will be to not just help you with your technique but primarily to encourage and enable you to consider what you photograph, why (i.e. to clarify what you are trying to communicate with your images) and to contemplate how your photographs can reflect your emotional as well as visual responses to the landscape. There will be lots of opportunities to do this out in the field with cameras in hand (well, on tripod preferably!) and back at our hotel.

The Hotel Foroyar

For this all-inclusive trip, we will be based at the Hotel Foroyar, a fabulous 4-star hotel based on the outskirts of Torshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands. Accommodation will be in double rooms (all single occupancy) and we will have breakfast and dinner at the hotel. We will take our lunches at various locations (or a packed lunch depending on our exact itinerary).

Storm Light Funningsfjordur

There will be a maximum of 10 participants. This 1:5 ratio keeps the group to a manageable size and enables us to work with people on a 1 to 1 basis when we’re out shooting. It also means that people have space to work and are less likely to get in each other’s way when we’re on location.

OUTLINE ITINERARY

When – Friday 1st May to Friday 8th May 2020

On Friday 1st May we will collect participants from Vagar Airport (the Faroe Islands International Airport) before traveling to our hotel where you will get some time to check in and familiarise yourself with the hotel before we meet for introductions just prior to our first dinner.
In general terms, the program will be flexible to make the best use of the locations, the light and the prevailing weather conditions (the Faroe Islands are known for their potential to give four seasons in one day) so this outline itinerary is a guide to locations rather than a program fixed in stone.
During our time together we will travel in two 9-seater vans to various locations across the islands. These will include: –
– the famous Gásadalur, which is located on the edge of Mykinesfjørður, surrounded by the highest mountains on Vágar where the Múlafoss waterfall falls into the ocean;
– the sandy bay at Tjornovik with its views to the Risin og Kellingin (‘The Giant and the Witch’) rock stacks;
– some of the picturesque fishing villages on the islands (for example Bour with its views across to the island of Tindholmur, Kunoy, the colored houses at Gjogv, and the turf-roofed church at Funnigur);
– Saksun, a small village near the northwest coast, with its small white church and a museum;
– Kirkjubour with its views across to the islands of Hestur and Koltur.
On Friday 8th May we will say our ‘goodbyes’ and return participants to Vagar Airport for their departures home.
